In today's world, accessibility signage is a necessity in public facilities that include office or residential buildings, malls, parks, transportation facilities, museums and historical landmarks. More specifically, these public spaces require evacuation and wayfinding maps that are accessible to everyone, including those with a visual impairment. To fulfill this market demand, Eye Catch Signs is launching a new tactile map program.
Eye Catch Signs, in consultation with professional mobility experts, has developed an innovative, functional and lasting tactile map solution ideal for any public facility. Our map solutions guarantee accessibility to wayfinding and interpretive information for everyone.
Using BrailliantTouch® technology, our tactile maps feature full colour sub-surface graphics, an ultra-resistant first surface and compliant Braille and tactile elements, resulting in an end product that is durable, aesthetically pleasing and fully functional in either an indoor or outdoor setting.
Because our BrailliantTouch® signs are manufactured using an ultra resistant encapsulating process, the final result is a sealed unit that resists vandalism and the picking of Braille and tactile elements. These tactile maps will withstand the rigors of high-traffic areas such as transportation facilities and schools. They are also easily sanitized using industrial cleaning agents, making them ideal for use in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Braille and tactile signage must be easy to read and identified by those who travel through the corridors, elevators and stairwells of every public facility, regardless of a customer's visual ability. In the US and Canada, the ADA and Canadian Standards Association guidelines describe the best practices for the design and manufacturing of accessibility signage. A key element in creating accessibility signage that achieves maximum visibility is to design a sign with the appropriate colour contrast between sign elements.
What exactly is colour contrast? It's the measured difference between the background colour and that of both tactile and pictogram elements. To ensure maximum visibility, the contrast should be high, 70 per cent being the recommended level. Signage using low contrast levels is problematic for all viewers.
So how does one proceed? At Eye Catch Signs, we are committed to producing signage that is compliant with industry standards. In the area of colour contrast, we have developed a series of popular colour pairings from two families of 'light' and 'dark' shades. The linked BrailliantTouch colour pairings chart will give you many examples of high-contrast colour choices using the standard 3M vinyl colours. Other pairings are certainly possible to meet your design needs, and we can work with you to meet these needs while respecting industry best practices.
